Biography

Jayne Meadows, originally named Jane Meadows Cotter, was born on September 27, 1919, and passed away on April 26, 2015. She was a prominent American actress known for her work on stage, in film, and on television, as well as for her contributions as an author and lecturer. Throughout her illustrious career, Meadows garnered three Emmy Award nominations and was the older sister of the well-known actress and memoirist, Audrey Meadows.

Meadows starred in several notable films, including Undercurrent, Song of the Thin Man, David and Bathsheba, Lady in the Lake, and Enchantment, which contributed to her reputation in Hollywood. Her television career began with an appearance as reporter Helen Brady in the 1953 Suspense episode titled F.O.B. Vienna. She became a familiar face on television, serving as a regular panelist on the original version of I've Got a Secret and occasionally appearing on What's My Line?. Meadows also featured on NBC's interview show, Here's Hollywood.

In her later years, she frequently appeared alongside her husband, Steve Allen, until his death in 2000. The couple's notable performances included an episode of Homicide: Life on the Street in 1998, where they played a feisty elderly couple, and their final joint appearance in the Diagnosis: Murder episode "The Roast" in 1999, marking Allen's last screen role. Meadows also had a role in the comedy City Slickers.
