Montagu Love
Biography
Montagu Love, born Harry Montague Love on March 15, 1880, in Portsmouth, Hampshire, was a prominent English actor celebrated for his work in film, stage, and vaudeville. He was the son of Harry and Fanny Louisa Love, and after receiving his education in Great Britain, he initially found success as a cartoonist and military correspondent for a London newspaper.
Love's theatrical journey took him across the Atlantic in 1913, where he joined a road-company production of Cyril Maude's play, "Grumpy." He soon became known for his compelling portrayals of heartless villains, a role he mastered during the silent film era. His notable performances include sharing the screen with Rudolph Valentino in "The Son of the Sheik," appearing alongside John Barrymore in "Don Juan," and working with Lillian Gish in "The Wind" (1928). Love's portrayal of Colonel Ibbetson in the silent adaptation of "Peter Ibbetson" (1921) solidified his status as a formidable on-screen antagonist.
Transitioning into sound films, he starred in the part-talkie "The Mysterious Island" with Lionel Barrymore. Love's other significant roles included Henry VIII in the 1937 version of "The Prince and the Pauper," and the bigoted Bishop of the Black Canons in "The Adventures of Robin Hood." He also played memorable characters in "The Life of Emile Zola" (1937) and "The Mark of Zorro" (1940).
His last film, "Devotion," was released posthumously in 1946, three years after his passing on May 17, 1943, at the age of 63. Montagu Love was laid to rest at Chapel of the Pines Crematory. His final performance was in "Wings Over the Pacific" (1943).
