Biography
Valentina Cortese (January 1, 1923 - July 10, 2019) was a celebrated Italian actress renowned for her captivating performances in film and television. Born in Milan, she made her mark in the cinematic world with notable roles beginning in the late 1940s. One of her significant early works was in Jules Dassin's Thieves' Highway (1949), which showcased her talent and opened doors to international recognition.
Her career continued to flourish with notable performances in Robert Wise's The House on Telegraph Hill (1951), where she starred alongside Richard Basehart, whom she married that same year. They welcomed a son but parted ways in 1960. Cortese's artistry peaked when she received an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress in 1975 for her role in François Truffaut's acclaimed film Day for Night.
Throughout her career, Cortese collaborated with renowned directors and appeared in remarkable films including Joseph L. Mankiewicz's The Barefoot Contessa (1954), Michelangelo Antonioni's Le Amiche (1955), and Terry Gilliam's The Adventures of Baron Munchausen (1988). Additionally, she worked with Franco Zeffirelli on several projects, including Brother Sun, Sister Moon (1972), the miniseries Jesus of Nazareth (1977), and the film Sparrow (1993).
