Dame Harriet Mary Walter DBE, born on September 24, 1950, is a distinguished British actress known for her extensive contributions to the theater, film, and television. Over her prolific career, which began in 1974, she has garnered critical acclaim, including a Laurence Olivier Award and multiple nominations for prestigious honors such as a Tony Award, three Primetime Emmy Awards, and a Screen Actors Guild Award. In recognition of her impact on the arts, she was appointed Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 2011.
Walter made her Broadway debut in 1983 and achieved notable success with the Royal Shakespeare Company, winning the 1988 Olivier Award for Best Actress in a Revival for her performances in productions like "Twelfth Night" and "Three Sisters." Her portrayal of Elizabeth I in the 2005 revival of "Mary Stuart" earned her the Evening Standard Award for Best Actress and a Tony nomination when she brought the role to Broadway in 2009. She has also played significant roles in "Macbeth," "Antony and Cleopatra," and an all-female Shakespeare trilogy where she took on the roles of Brutus, Prospero, and Henry IV.
Her film career includes appearances in significant titles such as "Sense and Sensibility," "Atonement," and "Star Wars: The Force Awakens."
